Account was created with my dotted gmail email

I got a “Verify your email” email from OpenAI which seems legit. I did not set up an account. I tried to to login myself with that email by hitting forgot password and so on, and I got the email again.

Did someone try to register with my email? Is there a different way to explain this?

My guess would be yes as the purpose of the verification reply email is to verify the creator when creating a new account.

Does it really matter?

Since you seem to want plausible reason consider that someone has an email similar to yours and it was just a typo.

Thanks for the reply.

I thought so too. But I do have a pretty unique gmail email, the the dot “.” was inserted to exactly separate my name and surname. I found that pretty creepy.

I do have my own OpenAI account with that gmail but without any dots. So it is possible that I have used the email with the dot to try to login from my phone, but definitely not yesterday when I got this “Verify your account email”.

Nope.

You need some more knowledge to clarify your problem.

When you say WHAT you will have gained the knowledge, think video game with lights glowing in an expanding circular ora. :slightly_smiling_face:

Dots don’t matter in Gmail addresses

Also I am not an OpenAI employee so do not have access to the accounts with your email address.

As a Discourse category moderator I also do not have access to your email address used with this forum.

So unless you specifically post your email address it is unknown to those using a Discourse forum. This is on purpose and for a good reason.

They tried to register. Unless you click the email, they failed.

And they also failed, because when you do click the email, you are the only one that can receive the password resets on the account that has been created. Then you are in control of one button that will never let them have a ChatGPT account on that phone number again.

That’s exactly what I am saying. They don’t matter in Gmail, but they do to OpenAI.

Yes - was just wondering if this is the only explanation why I got a “verify your account” email to a dotted-variation of my gmail email.

It would have been nice if you put that in the original post so that it did not lead to a discussion.

Correct this it is wrong.

In short you are saying that

GMail and OpenAI do not follow the same rules about dots in GMail addresses and this is causing problems.

As I am not an OpenAI employee and most OpenAI employees do not read all post in this forum and even notifying OpenAI employees from this forum does not often work, I will pass this along to someone who might be able to get this in the correct in box.
